Voter ID Update: Judge Denies State’s Post-trial Motion

Commonwealth Court denied the state’s post-trial motion for reconsideration in Applewhite v. Commonwealth, and as such the injunction against the Pennsylvania Voter ID law will stand.

Law Center executive director Jennifer Clarke said, “The court confirmed that the Voter ID law is unnecessary and disenfranchises hundreds of thousands of people. We call on the Governor, the Attorney General and the Secretary of State to stop spending our precious state dollars on defending this law, which is so dangerous to our democratic system.”

The state took this procedural step in January in order to eventually appeal the case to the Supreme Court. The state attacked nearly every aspect of the injunction.

Denial of the post-trial motion means the case can now begin to move forward through the appeals process. You can read Judge McGinley’s full decision here.
