A Moment of Truth about the Intentions of Voter ID

In a speech touting the accomplishments of the GOP-run legislature at the Republican State Committee meeting, the state’s House majority leader, Mike Turzai, remarked that the new Voter ID law will help Governor Mitt Romney win Pennsylvania. Turzai’s remarks suggest that the House’s end game of Voter ID would be to benefit the GOP politically. Critics have long asserted that the law would make voting more difficult for certain groups such as the elderly, minorities and students–all groups who tend to vote democratic.

“Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done,”said Turzai, listing Voter ID among other Republican legislative initiatives.

According to PoliticsPA.com, Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montco) says this is proof of the law’s true intentions: “This is making clear to everyone what Voter ID was all about. This is about one thing: disenfranchising Democratic voters and rigging elections for Republicans….When they get behind closed doors, they admit it. And that’s exactly what Turzai did.”

Turzai spokesman Stephen Miskin clarified his remarks, saying that Voter ID would offer Romney a more even playing field and that voter fraud was real problem. He declined to say if voter fraud had played a role in PA elections nor was he able to provide evidence of systematic voter fraud.
